Welcome to the CIPFA Better Goverance Forum
Effective use of public funds to deliver better governance

The CIPFA Better Governance Forum offers a unique member subscription service to public sector organisations throughout the UK.

The BGF provides access to practitioners with an interest in protecting and making the best use of public funds. The Forum has an ever growing membership base from all parts of the public sector. It is designed for practitioners who wish to work together to make the best use of and protect public funds and offers a focal point for bringing together senior practitioners with responsibility to deliver better governance.

Ensuring effective and workable governance is now right at the top of the corporate agenda in public sector organisations. To this end the forum covers:

  • counter fraud
  • risk management
  • auditing
  • information governance
  • ethical standards
  • corporate governance

A 'Scam' is 'a trick, a ruse; a swindle, a racket' (Oxford English Dictionary). Scam, as it is used currently, is both more specific and more general than its nearest synonym, 'Fraud'. Scams have often come to refer to a particular kind of fraudulent or misleading practice, characterised by widely disseminated initial approaches at long distance to people not known to the perpetrator ('scammer'); the scammer expects a low rate of return on the offer but is able to make a profit because the approach has low cost.
