It promotes good practice and help those responsible for public services to achieve better outcomes for citizens, with a focus on those people who need public services most

The EO's role is to help councils achieve the high standards of people management and development needed to ensure the continuous improvement of services
IDeA Knowledge
IDeA Knowledge delivers forward-thinking and in-depth content on improvement issues, shares examples of good practice from councils across England and Wales, and provides information on the IDeA's range of tools and services. IDeA Knowledge aims to stimulate and support self-sustaining improvement within local government.
The Improvement Network
The Improvement Network website helps people to improve local public services. Chiefly aimed at senior and middle managers in councils in England, it is also useful for anyone with an interest in improving local services. The website helps you to plan how to improve, and provides practical problem-solving tools, real-life examples of services that have been improved and signposts to useful advice and data. This website has been developed and supported by four national organisations with unrivalled knowledge of improving local services.
LGA Improvement
Securing improvement in local services through managing performance and community leadership is a key priority for councils. The CPA has helped to re-energise local government's commitment to improvement and has helped authorities to focus their efforts and resources on what must change if they are to become or remain excellent authorities. There are a number of strands to the LGA's improvement work.
Modernisation Meta-Evaluation
The meta-evaluation of the Local Government Modernisation Agenda in the UK has been commissioned by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM). It is being undertaken by a consortium of universities and consultancies led by the Centre for Local and Regional Government Research, Cardiff University. The meta-evaluation is part of a major programme of research being undertaken by a wider Evaluation Partnership and commissioned by ODPM during the period 2000-08.
ODPM: Ten Year Vision for Local Government
The ODPM is developing a ten-year vision for local Government - local:vision. At its heart is a vision of central and local Government working together to deliver better outcomes for people and places.
Office for Public Services Reform
To strengthen the Government's ability to improve public services, the Prime Minister established the Office of Public Services Reform in 2001. Based in the Cabinet Office, OPSR is responsible for pushing forward the reform of public services in accordance with the Prime Minister's four principles of reform, in order to improve customers' experiences of those services.

The Government's long-term goal is to establish world class public services through investment and reform to ensure that taxpayers receive real value for money. Strong and dependable public services are vital to extend opportunity, tackle social exclusion and improve people's quality of life. They also lay the foundations for a stronger, more productive economy.
