Performance

Strategic Performance Management is about defining, assessing, implementing and continuously refining an organisation’s overall ‘business’ strategy. API Report

Welcome to the dedicated Performance hub

This section has been set up to examine specific areas of the public sector strategic performance agenda in more detail.

CIPFA PIN and the Advanced Performance Institute have entered into a strategic partnership to develop a workstream that will help our members improve their strategic performance management systems. This partnership is led by CIPFA's Brendan McCarron and the API's Bernard Marr. They have developed a series of inter-connected workshops and will be writing a special practical performance management manual for members as part of the workstream.

  • Strategic Performance Management and the Strategy and Budgeting Process
16 September (London) and 17 September (York)
  • Strategic Performance Management - Reconciling what is important locally with National Targets and Indicators
9th December (London) and 10th December (York)

We will also be creating a guide to Strategic Performance Management for local authorities as an output of the workshops. This will be available in stages as the workshops progress, and completed in January 2009.

PIN's views of Performance

Performance Management is quite simply about creating the information and systems in organisations that lead to better performance.

A performance management systems can take many forms; but, at its core are four vital functions that must be systematically delivered, these are:

  1. A sub - system for setting objectives and thinking through connections to strategies
  2. A sub - system for collecting and analysing information
  3. A sub - system for taking appropriate action
  4. A sub - system for learning and adjustments (i.e. a feedback system that goes back to step 1)
